Preppy Sign Tutorial

Step#1:
open your image, find the polygonal lasso tool trace your image out like this:

Step #2:
when you want to finish your selection press ctrl and click, your image should look like this:

Step #3
Go to Select in your menu bar, click inverse, the selection should now be the part around you, not you.
right click on your layer, it should say background, now click create layer from background.
now find the eraser tool & erase your background. it should be transparent, and your image should now look like this:

Step #4
Create a new layer and make sure the layer of you, or a person is above this layer. use your vector in the bottom layer.
it should now look like this:

Step #5
select the parts of the image you want to fill, for each color create another layer.
if you want to outline like a border inbetween all of them, select the color you want to outline & select each part of it and go to Select > Modify > Expand and expand by an interval. i wouldnt go anything over 3 or 4 unless you have a big image because that will give you a huge border.
if you did all this your image should look like this now:

Step #6
If youre using Photoshop, right click on one of your layers with color, click Blending Options.
a window like this should pop up:

find the pattern overlay, choose your pattern, opacity, etc.
if you dont have Blending options, create a new layer as a clipping mask, or select the layer below it with the magic wand tool.
fill it with your pattern and set the opacity.
your image should now look like this:

If you want your white borders to be patterned, like dots, slashes, etc. then do what we just did to create the dots, just fill it with a smaller pattern, or whatever pattern youd like, this is what i used:

Step #7
Now over your last layer, you can fill that with a pattern, use a brush over it, whatever youd like.
Then take that plain black vector we used and select it with the magic wand, or create a clipping mask.
Fill it with Color, I made mine yellow.
It now looks like this:
Step #8:
Create a new layer, and repeat the steps we just did to put a pattern or brush over what used to be our vector.
Mine now looks like this:

Save your image as a .png to make the quality better and heres the finished product:
